im kinda confused about age laws?

Unread post by ReverseHivemind »

im in Aotearoa, where the age of consent is 16, and almost every single vaguely not disney approved space on the internet says something like "no minors, 18+", which is strange because none of them are american specific spaces and im under 18 and not really entirely a minor (the age laws here are in various categories, 16 year olds can have sex, get married, drive cars, etc, but are not age of majority until 20).
it creates a confusing situation where im both old enough and too young (by too young they usually mean teenagers are basically children).
theres no room for..... a vast amount of humanity because americans dont understand that other places exist. id like to post my nsfw art, which is perfectly legal here, but im worried about americans getting all pissy about other countries not abiding by laws america cant even agree on (ive seen this happen multiple times).

Heya!

I think the thing is that US federal law holds providers of "obscene" material accountable for who they make it available to. Not a lawyer, but from reading the materials it seems like even though it's not a crime for you to upload such a thing, but it is a crime for them to host it and let you or anyone else under 18 access it. And so it's not super relevant what the laws are where you live, but the what the law is where the hosts/websites are based.

However, I totally agree it is annoying that folks online policing eachother can be so America-centric! I think the only thing you can do there is say what you think and accept that indeed some people will not hear it!
