Treatment from Parents

When you want support through something scary or rough, and help pulling yourself together and getting through, this is the place.
Forum rules
We ask that users looking for general, ongoing emotional support post in this area of the boards, and that you use this space to both ask for, give and receive that support primarily from each other, rather than from our staff and volunteers. As a staff, we simply are often too overextended with all we need to do in running the organization and its services to do that for extended periods of time, and one of our main aims of our community at the boards has always been to facilitate peers to better be there for each other.

Users often report that they have no in-person peers they can talk to or seek support from: we want this to be a space for online peer support and somewhere everyone can get some practice asking for, getting and giving support so that doing it with people in your lives feels more doable.

Please remember that neither staff, volunteers nor your fellow users can provide or replace mental healthcare when that is something you need. Users struggling with issues like anxiety, depression, abuse or physical health issues are strongly encouraged to seek out qualified, in-person help with those issues in addition to peer or staff support.

If you insist...

That is true, but I also fail to find comfort in those activities as well.

Those were just some ideas. If none of those has worked for you, and all you find does so far is one thing (video games), then you'll just need to spend some more time -- time as in days, weeks, months, years -- exploring a range of things to find out what does work for you and get a bigger toolbox to work with when it comes to self-care. :)

I'm not sure if you've seen this already -- or if we gave you this link yet -- but if not, here's a bigger list of ideas to look at: Self-Care a La Carte. :)

Nothing in particular that stood out to me except for therapy, but I'm not exactly able to go see a professional, so I'm at a rut.

Would you be willing to give a couple of the things in that article a try, just to see if they do help bring you some comfort? Obviously, given how restrictive your parents are, some of them are not going to work, but what about something like taking a few minutes to try one of these exercises, or taking a nice bath or shower? There's not a lot to lose, really, by giving some of the items in that article a go just to see if they might help.

If therapy or counseling is something that stuck out to you in the self care piece, I'm wondering does your school have a counselor that you would be comfortable discussing some of these things with?

Ah that is too bad that your school does not have a counseling service. Hopefully some self-care techniques are working for you - let us know if you want to check in about any of the techniques or talk over anything else that is going on.

Good luck, and remember it takes time to find things that work. Sometimes more time than we would like, but eventually things do come to light.

I;m glad you're keeping at it. Like was said above, it can take some time to get connected to these kind of resources (that in and of itself is not great, but right now it's the nature of the beast), so the more you're able to fortify and take care of yourself, the better.

It admittedly feels like nothing has changed, and nothing even gives a glimmer of stress-relief, though.

I'm sorry to hear that. Even when you're making progress, it can sometimes feel as though you're totally stuck. And you have quite a bit you're trying to move though and cope with, so try as much as you can to be patient with yourself.

Would you mind giving me a sense of what self-care you've tried? That way we're not accidentally recommending things you've found don't work.

Hi there TrueJustice,

I'm sorry you're not finding anything to be helpful right now. I want to check in and see if you have a sense of what, if anything, we can do to specifically help at the moment. It sounds like none of the self-care thoughts we've mentioned here or had on our site are a great fit for you, and as Heather said in an earlier post, when that's the case then it's going to be a matter of you taking some time for experimentation or self-reflection to find some things that do work for you, or maybe focusing on reaching out to/making friends for in-person support.
If there's something in particular you think you are willing to take some steps with, and we can offer some feedback in that area, we're happy to do that. But I want to make sure we're focusing our efforts in the areas you're wanting to put effort into.

Hi Truejustice

I'm sorry to hear she's reacting that way (although, from what you've told us, I'm not surprised).

With the question Mo posed, what if you picked a small thing you'd like to take a step on (like being able to go to the library alone, or use the oven) and then we could try giving you some tips on how to approach that conversation?

Hello, Sam, nice to see you again.

I thank you for the concern (and that makes sense).

Perhaps being able to go to the nearby park on my own?

Hi TrueJustice,

I am glad you have a step you feel like you can pursue. :)
What kind of conversations have you had with your parents about the park in the past? And are there any ways you have thought about bringing up the topic that feel comfortable for you? Or any times of the day you think going to the park alone would be best for you or most plausible?

Hello, Carmen, nice to see you as well.

The only time we've "talked" about it (I apologize if I've already shared this story) is when my neighbor and I went there (and we did ask for permission), and our parents called the police, thinking we got kidnapped. So... The topic is certainly very iffy.
