periods

during my period, i noticed there was stretchy clear discharge along with bleeding. is this normal? and is it normal for my period blood to not be bright red? it's been more brownish red and dark brown. thank you

Hi Lycheefan,

Yes, menstrual flow can vary in color to some degree, so it won't always be bright red. That's partially due to the fact that menstrual flow contains more than just blood; it's a combination of blood, uterine tissue (lining that grew but wasn't needed because a pregnancy did not occur), cells from the lining of the vagina, bacteria, and vaginal discharges. That last element may also be why you noticed that clear discharge in addition to your menstrual flow, since vaginal discharge doesn't stop during a period.
