Broken condom

Unread post by daisygirl10 »

The side of the condom ripped a small hole as my boyfriend was pulling out. He did not ejeaculate and his penis was covered except for a small hole on the side near the base. What should I do?

Hi Daisygirl,

So, since he did not ejaculate, you can figure you've got some protection against pregnancy. However, if you would like to further lower the chances of this leading to pregnancy, emergency contraception is an option.

You may also want to read this article about proper condom use for the future, since breakage is, more often than not, because the condom was not used all the way correctly.

I did take EC, and I believe the condom broke because it began to "dry out". Broken condoms are very rare for us so I am glad to know why it failed and that I am protected.

Hi Daisygirl,

Glad you have a hunch as to what might have caused it. And, if you took EC, then that's all you can do at this point. You can now either wait for your period to show up, or wait until enough time has passed to take a pregnancy test.

Hi Daisy,

Yes, plan B is up to 98% effective when taken within 24 hours of the risk. The effectiveness decreases the longer you wait to take it, but even taking it 120 hours after the risk it's still up to 75% effective. You can read about that in a little more detail here:
Emergency Contraception (Plan B or the Morning-After-Pill)
