condom broke emergency contraceptive pill

Unread post by prats1401 »

Hii
I was having sex with my boyfriend today that is 24th of feb 2015 using a condom. So when he was about to ejaculate he pulled out ,that means we use double protection condom plus pull out method. So he ejaculated outside my vagina. He cleaned his penis with water after ejaculation.

We started having sex again for the second time after about 5 minutes. I Was dry or so i feel and the condom broke and as soon as my bf realized this he pulled out and showed me that it had broken from the tip. He did not ejaculate inside me the second time too. In fact, second time he did not ejaculate at all as we stopped having sex altogether after the breaking of the condom.

I am worried. Should i take emergency contraceptive pill because there can be little precum in the broken condom which could have entered my vagina. Also i had my last period on 10th of feb and i usually have a 30-31days of menstrual cycle.

Please reply as soon as possible.

Hi Prats,

So, since you used effectively used withdrawl when the condom broke, you do have some protection against pregnancy. However, if you want to make your chances as low as possible, then emergency contraception is advisable.

Hi sam

Thanks for your reply. I hesitate on takin an EC because i have read it messes up with your cycles badly. Also can you tell me in you opinion that when the condom broke while we were having sex the second time the amount of precum in the condom will be lower than the first time and even though he pulled out, some may still have entered my vagina. Im scared can i get pregnant by that? Also im on the 15th day of my cycle so its kind of a danger day.
Can you please look upon my case closely and reply ASAP.
i am very very scared also because im from india and all these things cannot be discussed with anyone openly which leaves me no room for clearing my doubts. So please help me. Is it really necessary to take EC at this time? I have regular cycles and i dont want to mess up with them.

Hi Prats,

You're correct that a side effect of EC is that it can make your cycle variable. However, the pre-ejaculate he had was slightly more likely to contain sperm since he'd recently ejaculated. So, this incident, as I said before, does pose a risk of pregnancy. So, it is up to you whether or not you take EC, but if you want to lower your risks as much as possible after this incident, EC is what will help you do that.

Also, would you like some info on how to avoid condom breakage in the future?

Hi sam

I read the articles and they are quite helpful but it has not been mentioned clearly what all side effects i will encounter if i take an EC? Can you help me out with that? Will i have lots of major changes in my cycle? And how long does it take to become alright?

Hi Prats,

Some common side effects are period irregularity, nausea, spotting, breast tenderness and head aches. But there's no way to know how likely or severe a given side effect will be for you, as everyone's body is going to react a little differently.

EC can help prevent pregnancy. EC is more effective the sooner after the risk you take it. Since you had your risk today, if you can get EC quickly, it has a very good chance of preventing pregnancy.

Hi
Is it possible that i might not have any side effects of EC because it had been almost 12 hours now and im absolutely normal. I am having pangs of paranoia that whether i actually took the pill or not. (When i know for sure that i had taken it)
So is it possible that i may not have any side effects, it may not effect my cycle at all and i will get my period around the usual expected date which is 13th of march?

Hi Prats,

It may be that you get delayed side effects, or mild side effects. As for the cycle irregularity, there is really no way to know if it's occurred until you have a late or otherwise irregular period.

Please be patient. We do say in our guidelines that there may be a bit of a wait for a response, and it has not even been 24 hours.

The timing of a pregnancy test depends on which test you get. Generally, you'll need to wait until it's been at least two weeks since your risk, but the directions of the test you get may say something else, so follow those directions.

Emergency contraception has no permanent or long-term effects on fertility. It can affect your cycles for a few months, but it has no permanent effects on your ability to become pregnant.

Sorry for showing impatience. It was just that i was getting almost instant replies from your side and thats why i got confused that why the responses stopped coming altogether.
Apologies for not reading your guidelines and thankyou for bearing with me.

Thanks.. :)

One more doubt i have regarding my original query is.. I need to know that suppose, in my case, pregnancy was not supposed to occur in the first place (i was not ovulating or sperms didnot reach inside the vagina whatever the reason maybe) but i took the EC so in this case what role will the pill play?

It won't have anything to do, basically. :) The extra hormones may cause some side effects, but other than that, it won't do anything at all because there's nothing for it to do in the first place.

The thing with side effects is that with anyone, and any medication, those are things that could POSSIBLY happen. They might, they might not. And side effects aren't something that proves a medication has worked. A lot of people think that, so get worried when they don't have them, but that just isn't how this works.

Hi

As i had mentioned above, my period was expected on 12th of march and i had taken an EC on 24th of feb, i was feeling a lot of abdonimal pains since a week and normally i get such pains just before my period is about to come. Now its been more than a week, since the pains came and subsided and there is no sign of a period. Im worried. Is everythin okay?
