Birth Control help

Hello, everyone. I'm in a bit of a pickle. I have been on the pill for about 1.5 years... I had recently finished my last pill pack on the 9th of July. The 10th was when I was supposed to start my new pill pack, but I didn't. I stopped. From that time and now, I have not been sexually active. I have not received my period for the month of August and I should have started my period in early August. Its now September. I have already spoken to a Planned Parenthood professional about my decision of stopping the pill and what the effects will be. They said it was normal to not receive your period right after stopping the pills. It will take about 2-3 months for it to come back. However, I'd like to start the patch tonight. I am not sure if I'm supposed to wait a period of time or wait until my period comes and take it on the last day of my period. What must I do?

Note: I did read my birth control patch directions carefully. It mentions that if the person is going to use the patch a week after birth control active pills, they can take it, but use a non-contraceptive back up method (condoms, etc)...I guess my situation would apply even if I haven't gotten my period yet in a month...?

Thank you.

Hi juxtamedullary,

I'd suggest calling the doctor who prescribed you the patch to confirm when you should start it. As for backing up, I'd recommend you do so for at least a little while (again, best to ask the doctor exactly how long), although we generally advise backing up with condoms no matter what, since it adds another layer of protection.
