The only thing I know about a change in how the DSM treats paraphilia is that in the DSM-5, the most recent edition, there was more of a distinction made between paraphilia and a paraphilic disorder, where the latter specifically causes someone personal distress/impairment or poses a risk to others.
I think any time you're describing what is a "normal" or "typical" sexual interest vs. an "abnormal" or "atypical" one it's going to be tough to make that call; there are a lot of cultural and contextual variables that can make something acceptable in one setting and unacceptable in another. There's at least some nuance written into the guidelines. Is it enough nuance? I'm not sure! But I'd be very surprised to see that section removed from the DSM altogether.
