Bruised Cervix

Unread post by gatesy08 »

So I went to the doctor to discuss the light spotting I've been experiencing after sex. She took a look at my cervix and said it looks bruised and described it almost as a paper cut on my cervix. I THINK the medical term is erosion but I could be wrong. Anyways she said no worries should clear itself and I can even keep having sex. I just wanted a little more of an understanding of what this is and how it happened to me.

Hi gatesy,

We can't say for certain what caused it, but it was likely that either during sex or during masturbation that you inserted something that bumped into your cervix enough to cause this.

To start out with, how much information about it did your healthcare provider give you?

She told me it looks bruised and described it as a paper cut. She used the word ectropion and said if it doesn't go away and the symptoms are stil bugging me I can have it cauterized.

Got it. The most succinct description I've found come from Our Bodies, Ourselves under the heading of benign cervical conditions.

"Cervical eversion (also called ectropion) occurs when the kind of tissue that lines the cervical canal grows on the outer vaginal part of the cervix, making it red, with a bumpy-looking texture that is smooth to the touch. If the inside (columnar epithelium) puckers out, that is referred to as eversion. This is a common physical variation. Most women do not have any symptoms, although eversion can cause bleeding during a Pap test. Eversion requires no treatment unless it is accompanied by infection. Those of us whose mothers took diethylstilbestrol (DES) during pregnancy are more likely to have this condition.

Cervical erosion is a pinkish-red sore on the cervix, next to the cervical opening. This rare condition causes little discomfort. Most cases referred to as erosion in the past were really eversion."

It's right here: http://www.ourbodiesourselves.org/healt ... onditions/

The health information on the Our Bodies, Ourselves website is also available in book form, and you'd probably be able to find a copy at the library or in a bookstore if you're interested. (I got my copy of the most up to date edition at Chapters, and it was less than $30.)
