Antibiotics and Birth Control

Unread post by natcmau »

Hello!

I was recently being treated for a UTI with ciprofloxacin. I took it twice a day for
ten days and recently completed the prescription during my placebo week of my tri-previfem birth control pills- about two days ago. I refrained from sexual activity during this time and I just started taking my week one pills again yesterday. I was wondering when my birth control will be fully effective again. I know that some antibiotics affect BC and I just want to be informed and safe. My partner and I always use a condom anyways, but I'll have more peace of mind knowing my birth control is also operating at full force. Thanks!!

You say you finished the treatment during the withdrawal week? If so, you can rely on your protection again now that you've started the new pack.

Just so you know, for future reference, the class of antibiotics usually prescribed for UTIs is not one known to interact with oral contraceptives. And if your doctor knows, as they should from your records and intake forms where you filled out what medications you take, you are using the pill, know they will usually tell you if and when you need to be concerned about possible interactions. :)

That makes me feel so much better, thanks!!

We use a back up form of BC (condoms) anyways, but I like to be extra careful. So UTI medications such as Cipro don't normally clash with oral contraception??

Correct! As Heather said, "the class of antibiotics usually prescribed for UTIs is not one known to interact with oral contraceptives."
