Liz: we don't generally delete accounts here unless we have to ban a user, as mentioned in our registration agreement.
But all that would do anyway is remove your ability to post anymore. So, if you simply stop posting, it'll be the same situation as it would were your account deleted.
If you just want to change your handle (we also suggest people pick handles different than they use elsewhere online to help people avoid this), you just go into your profile options in your account and choose to edit your public name. Whatever you choose will be what shows up on all past and future posts.
