Hi Jakeh34,

Did you and your sexual partner discuss STI status prior to sex? If not, then you could ask them if they know their status and, if they don't, go ahead and get tested. If you don't have a means of getting a hold of them, then we'd recommend getting tested. You can read more about that process here: Testing, Testing...

So you're aware, when STIs do show symptoms it's not going to feel like the common cold.

Was told they was clean, but you never know. Thank you this has put my mind to rest for sure but will definitely think about getting tested regularly now!

You're welcome. If they said they tested negative (the term we prefer over "clean" since it doesn't reinforce negative ideas about people with STIs), you may want to follow up with them to ask what they were tested for, since some tests only screen for one or two STIs.

You'd want to wait a week or two after the incident to test for STIs like Chlamydia and Gonorrhea and at least a month to test for HIV. When you go in to get tested, you can ask for a full panel so that you'll be tested for as many STIs as possible.

There are some test kits available for certain STIs, and you should read the NHS advice about those tests here: http://www.nhs.uk/Livewell/Pharmacy/Pag ... afety.aspx

You'd still want to consult a pharmacist before buying one of those tests, a more thorough option would be to go to a sexual health clinic and get tested there (if cost is a concern, many clinics offer free or reduced cost services for those who need them).
