washing menstrual cup with the tap water in India

I live in India, and we don't use the tap water for things like drinking, I don't know the exact reasons why you don't consume it, but I read that the water treatment plants aren't clean, I couldn't find other sources (although we do use it to wash the dishes, hmm. ).

So can I wash my menstrual cup with tap water when I start using it? Or would it be safer to not take risks and use drinking water to wash it, because the tap water might have dangerous stuff for the vagina? (using drinking water every day of my period for that would be very inconvenient, so I wanted to ask here)

Or maybe I could boil some tap water and use that to wash the cup?

I guess I want to hear that it's fine to just rinse the cup in the sink

Hey there, it’s fine to ask this!

I’d say that when in doubt about water quality anywhere with something that goes into your vagina, if you have the ability to boil it, that’s great and absolutely solves any bacteria issues. You always want to boil a cup in water at the end of every cycle to sterilize it, no matter the water.

But when you rinse it in the sink, if you are using a little mild soap — which is okay, it will rinse off — that should also take care of any bacterial issues with the water. That’s how you do it with cups when camping anywhere with unfiltered water, so I don’t see why it would be any different in this case.
