I’m getting the contraceptive implant because I’m scared of project 2025

Unread post by Jay27 »

I’m doing ok on the pills but I’m scared that the republicans will restrict access to birth control or ban it. So I have an appointment to get the implant in 2 weeks. My parents think I’m crazy and overreacting but my therapist said I should get the implant if it gives me peace of mind. Am I overreacting?

Hey Jay!

I totally share your concern about Project 2025, it's scary stuff. It's not yet actual policy, but the risk that the worst parts of it will happen is really worrying, there is going to be a lot of people organising to resist it being put into effect, at every level, so we have a big political battle on our hands with that. But if restrictions to Birth Control do become a reality and make their way to your state, it may actually be a good thing that you are using a long-acting method as all their effort is initially going to go towards restricting access and attacking providers, and even educators (like us!) - so having a method that can last you a long time may be beneficial.

From now through 2024 the U.S.A is in a transition period, meaning there's not going to be a change in government until the new congress starts on January 3rd and the presidential inauguration on January 20th.

I'm so very sorry that you even have to think about any of this when just wanting to manage your healthcare!

Do you have any ideas for reducing my anxiety about the implant, and how I can ignore my parents’ judgment about it? I’m a legal adult so I can do whatever I want, but it’s really hard to deal with them calling me dumb and crazy.

Hi Jay

I know it can be hard to stay confident in your own judgement when faced when a parent's disapproval. Would it help if you reminded yourself of why your parents are wrong about this? It's not just that you are an adult and can do whatever you want, it is that they have no grounds on which to criticize you. As Jacob said, if birth control and other reproductive healthcare becomes harder to access, having a long term method in place may end up being very useful. I bet it will also save you from feeling stressed in the meantime. Additionally, the implant is an option that you could consider even without the current political circumstances, and it is your right to choose it if it feels like the best option for you. This is a routine and simple healthcare decision that many people make safely all the time.

Saying someone is dumb or crazy when you disagree with them incredibly rude, all on its own. But even if your parents were right, this just isn't how they should communicate with you. The fact that they've jumped to these kinds of attacks says more about them and their view of the world than it does about you or your judgement.

If I may ask, what is it about the implant that is making you anxious? Are you nervous about the procedure? Does this feel like a big decision that you can't reverse?

I talked to my dad about it again and he was much more open to learning the facts. My mom has untreated anxiety so she tends to overreact to medical things. I’m nervous to get the implant because I have PTSD associated with going to the doctor, and I hate needles. Also, sometimes numbing injections don’t work on me

Hey Jay,
I want to reiterate what others said - this isn't an overreaction by any means and its your right to make decisions about your own body.

Going in for medical procedures can be scary and I'm sorry you've had experiences in the past which make it more difficult for you. It might help to have a supportive person there with you - if your dad is open to learning more, would he be a good candidate to accompany you to the doctor? If not, is there someone else that comes to mind?

Finally, moving through the fear of the operation will be easier if you continue to remind yourself why you are making this decision. Remember that you are trading a couple painful moments with the needle for an increased peace of mind for a few years. It will still feel scary most likely, but holding onto the "why" can help get you through the moment.

I go to college out of state, so my dad wouldn’t be able to go with me. I was thinking of bringing my girlfriend. She’s been to urgent care with me before and she’s very supportive.

I think that's a great idea! Have you spoken with her about your anxiety surrounding the procedure already? It may also be a good idea to have a care plan in place for after the operation. It doesn't have to be to complicated, just some simple comfort activities to look forward to with friends, your girlfriend or by yourself.

Have you already scheduled the appointment?

Yes, I made the appointment the morning after Election Day. It’s in 10 days. My girlfriend knows I’m anxious about it. I might reward myself with a good snack and some rest afterwards. I have class on the day I’m getting the implant, but there were only two appointments left in November so I might have to be late or miss my morning class.

That's a wonderful idea. And I'd say a tardy or missed class is worth the mental tranquility this will give you. <3

The Planned Parenthood receptionist I talked to on the phone says that the nurse can write me an excused absence note :)
