We ask that users looking for general, ongoing emotional support post in this area of the boards, and that you use this space to both ask for, give and receive that support primarily from each other, rather than from our staff and volunteers. As a staff, we simply are often too overextended with all we need to do in running the organization and its services to do that for extended periods of time, and one of our main aims of our community at the boards has always been to facilitate peers to better be there for each other.
Users often report that they have no in-person peers they can talk to or seek support from: we want this to be a space for online peer support and somewhere everyone can get some practice asking for, getting and giving support so that doing it with people in your lives feels more doable.
Please remember that neither staff, volunteers nor your fellow users can provide or replace mental healthcare when that is something you need. Users struggling with issues like anxiety, depression, abuse or physical health issues are strongly encouraged to seek out qualified, in-person help with those issues in addition to peer or staff support.

How do you blow off steam?
It's been a frustrating, bad day and you find yourself full of nasty emotions that need a release. What do you do when you feel that way? What things have you found work well vs less well?
For me, I've started boxing, which helps a lot because a) I get to punch things and b) I have to focus so much on what my body is doing that the negative feelings get pushed out of my brain.
How about y'all?

And you to whom adversity has dealt the final blow/with smiling bastards lying to you everywhere you go/turn to and put out all your strength of arm and heart and brain/and like the Mary Ellen Carter rise again.

When I feel really angry or jealous I practice on my guitar.

(Is it a Fender? I have to ask. )

Writing. My journal is the best for this sort of thing. As I once wrote, "Paper won't laugh."
Or, if I'm so mad that I can't even write fast enough to get it out of my system, I go somewhere private, turn on the audio recorder on my phone, and rant aloud. Then if I feel the need I play the recording back and nod in sympathy with myself. You wouldn't believe how cleansing that second part can be.

I throw vegetables at zombies.
Okay, that's only one of the things I do, but it sounds a lot more fun than the rest.
Some other good ones for me have been:
- Boxing and mixed martial arts (hint: you can always tape something unto your heavy bag. President Bush's face was frequently pinned unto mine for years)
- Mosh pits. I really miss the days when a) there were plenty of mosh pits to be found, and b) I was young enough to be fearless in them instead of terrified
- Drumming
- Yelling (in places where no one is around and it's okay)
- Writing, for sure
- Playing with pets
- Just finding ways to be utterly silly.
