Antidepressant Orgasm Issues

Unread post by Ginger!! »

Hello Scarleteen.
I recently started taking antidepressants & already noticed some of the sexual side effects being apparent.
It makes me so sad. It’s unfortunate that in order to do better mentally I have to sacrifice my sexuality. And it’s not commonly something that gets better as it goes on. My sexuality gives me an immense amount of confidence & self love, I know it’s not gone but crucial parts of it are on hold.
Do you guys have any advice or information? I want to be educated & attempt to change my mindset on the whole situation.
We tend to think of the erotic as an easy, tantalizing sexual arousal. I speak of the erotic as the deepest life force, a force which moves us toward living in a fundamental way.

Hey there.

So, the idea you will have to sacrifice your sexuality...well, that's just not likely to be true. Not only is sexuality far more than our sexual desire or orgasm, it's also just very unlikely you will have to live with sexual side effects forever because of an SSRI. Take heart: this too shall probably pass. <3

New medications tend to have the strongest side effects, whatever the medication, so first of all, I'd give it a couple of months and see if any of what you are experiencing changes or gets more minimal: it probably will. weeks or months of them, period.) The same can be the case for even the mood you are in around this: after all, sexual side effects aren't the only effects of SSRIs: it can be a bit of a rocky emotional road in the first few. If the side effects you are experiencing don't diminish or go away, your next step will be to talk to your prescribing physician, let them know which sexual side effects you are having, and then work with them to see if changing your dose or trying a different SSRI altogether -- some are known for no to minimal sexual side effects -- is the answer.

In the meantime, can you say some about what side effects you are feeling that are distressing to you right now, and perhaps we can do some brainstorming together about how to manage those while your body and mind adjust to the meds?

Hello! Thank you for your reply. I did end up talking with my psychiatrist, my side effects were abnormal for such a low dose. I was told not to take it anymore & we are trying something different.
I appreciate your words during my rough moment. Thanks again.

Don't Heather's words carry!? I will let them know you were able to problem solve with your psychiatrist. They'll be thrilled! We love a doctor that leaves space for these honest conversations.

Since your words about self love and confidence inspired me, here's an article written by our lovely Heather to help support the beautiful relationship you have with your desire and sexuality while you transition between medications. My journey to meld self love with my sexuality has had ups and downs so I am glad to hear you are starting your journey with so much love. Best of luck Ginger!!
