am I in love with my best friend

Unread post by unicorncereal19 »

I'm 19 and my best friend is 23. I know that there's an age difference but we just click so well. We met through work and we're super close. I love her so much and she's definitely a friend for life and she feels the same way about me, too. However, lately I've been thinking, if there might be more to it on my side. I can't stop thinking about her, I scroll through our old messages and photos and I just have this urge to bring her up in every conversation I ever have with anyone. I feel excited when she puts her hand on my shoulder or sits near me. (she's not much of a physical person so these are big things for her) I know that platonic feelings can be intense as well, but this is unlike anything I have ever felt before.

The other problem is the fact that she tells me that she is straight. I do not want to analyze another person's identity too much, but I just desperately need to know whether I am being delusional or not... She has repeatedly mentioned that she "should just like women" or that she wishes that she did, because men always let her down. She's never had a boyfriend even though there has been opportunities. She always seems to find something a little wrong with every guy she talks to. It's what I used to do with guys before realising I'm probably just a lesbian. It just seems like she may not be genuinely that excited about men, but being more excited by the idea of talking about dating/men.

She recommended me a book, that was about a lesbian couple and told me that it "made her think". Idk what about tho, she didn't say anything else. Never asked her more about it, but I should've. One time we were sitting on a couch watching our other friends sing some song on karaoke, when I suddenly noticed her staring at me from the corner of my eye. She was smiling and there was this weird "softness" in her eyes. She kept staring for like 20 secs, smiling the whole time and then I finally just asked "What?". She replies "nothing", and continues smiling but stops staring at me. Is that a casual friend thing to do or not? Am I going crazy? One time after a really good girls’ night, she said: “I don’t know if a man can ever make me this happy.” (there were two other girls there too)

She's my favorite person ever and it would kill me if I lost her friendship so idk if I can ever talk about this to her. And I'm not even sure if I'm falling for her or is this just all delusion. Please tell me your thoughts!!

Hi unicorncereal19!

It sounds to me like you're in a situation where you need to decide whether you want to talk with her about your feelings or not. Either way, your relationship may change and that is ok.

Looking into the way people may act in order to pick up on their sexuality isn't uncommon - in so many ways it is how queer people find each other! What I will say is that those things are not always accurate and what someone says about their own sexuality is what is true. Those signs you mentioned may seem more prevalent because of your own feelings towards her. All of that to say that the only way to know how she feels is to have a conversation about how you feel.

I know it isn't easy, and probably not what you want to hear, but there is no way for me, or anyone, to tell what she is feeling.

Here is a good article that may help you think about building that communication -- Hello, Sailor! How to Build, Board and Navigate a Healthy Relationship
